Ingrown nails may start as a small irritation, but they can quickly become painful, swollen, and even infected, especially if you try to treat them at home. Any toes can be affected but it mostly occurs in the big toe. At Central Massachusetts Podiatry, we provide safe, effective ingrown toenail treatment to relieve pain, prevent recurrence, and get you back on your feet.

What Is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail, usually on the big toe, grows into the surrounding skin instead of over it.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp pain or tenderness along the nail edge
  • Redness, swelling, or warmth
  • Pus or drainage (possible infection)
  • Difficulty wearing shoes or walking

What Causes Ingrown Toenails & Risk Factors

Several everyday habits or conditions can cause ingrown toenails:

  • Improper nail trimming (cutting too short or rounding edges)
  • Ill-fitting footwear such as tight or narrow shoes that put pressure on the toes
  • Injury or repetitive trauma (sports, running, stubbed toes)
  • Genetic nail shape (curved or thick nails)
  • Poor foot hygiene or fungal infections
  • Underlying medical conditions like diabetes or circulation problems

Our Treatment Approach

We treat both mild and chronic ingrown toenails, focusing on pain relief, infection prevention, and long-term results.

Conservative Treatments

  • Warm salt soaks
  • Topical antifungal creams
  • Gentle lift & trim (when safe and appropriate)
  • Onyfix Nail Correction - uses a resin strip to gently guide the nail to grow correctly over time.

When Surgical Treatment Is Needed

If ingrown toenails are severe or keep coming back, a simple in-office procedure may be recommended. There are two main options:

  1. Temporary Nail Removal
The ingrown portion or the full nail is removed to relieve pain. Healing is quick, though a small overgrowth of tissue (granuloma) may appear and can be treated at your follow-up.
  2. Permanent Nail Edge Removal (Matrixectomy)
For chronic cases, the nail edge is removed and a mild acid is applied to stop that part of the nail from growing back. Redness, drainage, and peeling skin are normal during healing and are not signs of infection.
IMPORTANT NOTE

Each procedure involves potential risks or complications. Talk to your podiatrist for personalized advice. Learn more about our treatment procedure here.
