Heel Fissure Treatment Process

TREATMENT PROCESS

This is my current treatment process for treating cracked heels.

  • 1st Visit - Evaluate skin and determine cause of the cracked heel. Evaluate need for orthotics to reduce pressure from heel region. Remove any thick skin and callusing on the heel region. If there is a deep fissure sometimes need to debride (take off the callused hard tissue) until there is fresh bleeding tissue. Then apply steri-strips and a wrap around the foot to hold the fissures closed for 3-5 days. Then we go onto the treatments below.
  • Treatment Options - Most of the time treatment is a combination of shoe changes, urea cream, heel cup and moisturizing socks. Many times I will trim the callus and recommend you use a pumice stone. Sometimes you may need to use super glue to hold the skin together and sometimes orthotics or inserts can be used to reduce friction on the skin.

COMPLICATIONS

If you notice any signs of infection or wound developing contact the office.
